Acupuncture is based on specific anatomic points called “acupoints.” These points are stimulated using tiny, thin needles, which correct the flow of energy— also called qi or chi—restoring balance and relieving pain. It is a safe and effective treatment that promotes a healing response for restoring balance and relieving pain in the body.
Studies have shown that acupuncture is effective for various conditions, including; chronic injuries and pain, headaches and migraines, sleep disorders, nausea, hormone imbalance, anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.

How does acupuncture/dry needling work?
Acupuncture involves penetrating the skin with thin needles activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.
Dry Needling is a bit different – as it is about inserting needles into tender points to get a muscle twitch response which can be uncomfortable but leaves the muscles feeling quite relaxed. Great for chronically tight areas that “won’t let go”. Dry needling is a great adjunct to physiotherapy.
Needling is a minimally invasive therapy designed to stimulate nerve-rich areas of the skin’s surface to target tissue, glands, organs and various functions of the body.
Each acupuncture needle causes a slight injury at the insertion site, causing minimal discomfort or pain, and sends a signal to your body to respond. The response involves:
- Stimulating the immune system.
- Encouraging blood flow to the area.
- Wound healing and pain relief.
What are the benefits of acupuncture/dry needling?
Acupuncture / dry needling can be used to treat a wide range of disorders, including emotional disorders, digestive disorders, hormone imbalances, pain disorders, and chronic diseases.
Acupuncture is an effective complementary therapy to physiotherapy as it can be utilised to treat all types of musculoskeletal pain. It is an effective method of relieving chronic back, neck, and knee pain. Acupuncture can also calm a spastic or painful muscle in those who have experienced trauma to the muscle.
People with joint pain may also benefit from acupuncture because it can help to reduce inflammation and restore natural function to the joints. It may also help treat sciatica and tendonitis.
What can I expect from my acupuncture/dry needling treatment?
Acupuncture is performed using hair-thin needles. Most people experience minimal pain as the needle is inserted; you may feel a brief stinging or tingling sensation. After the needle is inserted, you may experience a dull ache at the base of the needle that will subside.
Acupuncture / dry needling is relatively painless in most cases. Needles may have a mild electric current may be applied to them. Your acupuncturist will use single-use, disposable, sterile needles for your treatment.
Your acupuncturist will spend time discussing your symptoms and concerns before commencing treatment. The needles will stay in place for between 5 and 30 minutes. Some people say acupuncture leaves them feeling energised. Others say they feel relaxed or tired. Once the needles are in place, it is an ideal time to reflect, relax and be mindful.
